Planning a Baby Boomer Road Trip

As winter declines, more and more people will take to the roads to travel on a road trip. Baby boomers comprise a large part of the road trip population because more and more people who are over the age of 65 are still driving. What better to do with their free time than see the country on a great road trip? If you are a ‘Boomer' you probably know that you are a different driver now than you were 40 years ago. So here are some rules to follow which will make your road trip as enjoyable as possible.

  • Once you have decided you plan on taking a road trip, get your vehicle checked out and make sure everything is working nicely. If it is time to change the air filter, get that replaced. The condition on your tires is extremely important for a worry free road trip, so make sure they are in excellent condition. Don't forget about your coolant system either, get it checked thoroughly.
  • You should get a check up too! Make sure your vision and hearing have been recently checked by a doctor. If you have just gotten new glasses, wait a month before going on a road trip so your eyes can adjust. Get plenty of rest on the week leading up to your trip.
  • If you take medications, make sure they will not cause you to be drowsy.
  • Plan your road trip so you don't hit any major rush hour spots. It will be more enjoyable to drive when less traffic is on the road. Between nine and four are excellent times to avoid any rush hour traffic. If you still want to drive during rush hour times, plan so you aren't going through a big city.
  • Try to check road conditions by phone or internet as much as possible. This will save you unnecessary headaches.
  • Don't drive by yourself, chances are you won't be…but just in case you thought about it. When you are with another person it helps keep you awake and entertained.
  • Always let a family or friend know of your intended driving path and destinations. Check in to let them know you are well.
  • Enjoy yourself!
