How to Handle Different Off Road Driving Terrains

The joy of off road driving can quickly end if you find your vehicle stuck in some messy terrain. In order to make the most of your off road adventures, here are some tips for driving in deep mud, sand, or snow.

  • A trick to get your car moving better through deep sand, snow, or mud is to slightly deflate your vehicle’s tires. This simple trick will provide your tires with better traction for the messy terrain. However, be sure to re inflate your tires when returning to normal roads.
  • If you find yourself in a situation where you’ve lost traction, it is best to quickly move your steering wheel side to side in small turns. This maneuver will help your front tires find some extra grip to avoid an out of control slip incident.
  • When driving through difficult terrain, be sure to use steady momentum to get your car all the way through. Maintain your speed and be sure you’re in high gear. Do not stop until you are out of the difficult terrain, otherwise you risk getting stuck where you stop.
  • If you find yourself driving in ruts due to muddy terrain, be aware of where your car tires are pointed at all times. Since your tires will tend to follow the ruts regardless of how the wheel is turned, it is important that you are aware of which way the car will go if you finally hit a dry spot that allows for traction.
  • Keep in mind that hard snow you may drive on in the early morning may be impassable when soft later due to higher day time temperatures.
