Holiday Driving Tips
Whether traveling short or long distances, traveling during the holidays seems to be more unsafe because of the amount of drivers on the road. So here are some safety tips and helpful hints to make your travels more safe and enjoyable.
If going on a longer road trip, make sure that you leave as early as possible, preferably in the early morning. By getting a good night's sleep and head start before the rush hour your drive will be more pleasant, and not at all rushed. If you are driving on a trip with other licensed drivers, make sure to have a schedule of when each driver will take over for the previous. Switching turns helps drivers stay focused and awake. Also, never use caffeine to prevent you from dozing off if you feel sleepy, either pull over to rest or have someone take over for you. Each year many accidents are caused by drivers dozing off at the wheel.
Be sure to rest on long road trips to stretch your legs, your pet's legs, or your children. Being cooped up in a car for four hours will make anyone feel grouchy. Pack healthy snacks and stop at markets instead of eating junk food; cheese, fruit, and crackers taste just as good as potato chips.
Short distance driving tips vary from the long road trip. When going to social events over the holidays, make sure there is an appointed designated driver before you leave for the event. Take turns with people over different events, just not in the same night.
When traveling to look at Christmas/holiday lights always make sure to slow down and pull to the side of the road nearest the lights. If going especially slow, make sure to park your car and take a look by walking, this way you won’t cause a traffic jam or irritate the people behind you.
In a battle over parking spots, the person who was there first and signaled for the spot is always in the right of way. Don't get into a major fight over a spot, it is tacky and there are plenty left, they just may be further away.
