How to Make your Work Commute More Enjoyable

As each year passes, it seems as though more and more Americans spend a larger amount of time commuting to work. The average time spent driving to work is longer than two weeks of vacation time.

When we are in our vehicles traveling to and from work, we usually don't enjoy the time we have. We either worry about being late for work, our kid's soccer game, or we get angry because there is bumper to bumper traffic.

Fortunately, there are a few ways to make our commuting time more enjoyable.

  • You can prepare for a better ride by going online and mapping out the best commute. Have these available in your vehicle especially if you are new to an area. Different ways to get to work are also helpful when there is bad traffic.
  • When you travel try renting or buying books on tape. Now you will be able to enjoy the stories you were looking forward to reading but just didn't have time for. You can also rent language tapes to bone up on your Spanish or another language of your choice. These types of things will help keep your mind active and help you stay positive.
  • Try to take different routs to work if you have the time to do it. Changing your surroundings will help you focus on driving more and provide a small change that may be needed.
  • Ask your boss if you can come in later and leave later or vice versa. Then you will be able to avoid most traffic and have a more enjoyable commute.
  • When you are stressed, it can affect your health. Train yourself to relax more and stop thinking your drive as a race. Think of the time in your vehicle as personal time. When you are stressed you won't get to your destination faster.
