How to Keep your Teens Safe on the Road
Many of us begin to worry about our children driving the day they get their permit. These fears can extend to sometime after they have their license. The good thing is that there are several things we can do to help keep them safe.
#1 Just because they have turned 16 it doesn’t mean they are required to have a license that second. Spend several hours in the car with them until you feel comfortable that they are well-adjusted to the roads. They may be a little upset with you, but they will turn out to be better drivers and it could save you some money on automobile repairs.
#2 Pay attention to the time. Many car accidents can occur because of a friends influence. Know who your child is hanging out with and where they are.
#3 Always know where they are. Spend several hours in the car with them until you feel comfortable that they are well-adjusted to the roads. They may be a little upset with you, but they will turn out to be better drivers and it could save you some money on automobile repairs.
#4 Be a good example. Take a look at your self in the mirror; are you a good driver? Do you chat on your mobile phone for a long time while driving? Do you have alcoholic drinks and then drive? Your children will notice and most likely follow your lead.
#5 Teach your child responsibility. If your child looks at having or driving a car as a privilege and not something that they deserve it will give them the right attitude. Teach them responsibility by having them help pay for insurance or pay for gas.
#6 Teach your child the way to take care of a vehicle. Basic maintenance should be taught before your child gets their license. Also, learning how to change a tire is very useful. If you can establish these habits early, your child will continue them for the rest of their life.
