Planning a Winter Road Trip

If you’re in the midst of planning a winter road trip, be sure to follow these guidelines for maximum fun and safety.

Watch for Work Zones

Before you get out on the road, you should be sure you have thoroughly researched your travel destination and more importantly - how to get there. Luckily, the internet is a great tool for searching directions to almost anywhere - the problem you may encounter is running into construction or closed roads that weren't made clear in the internet driving directions. So after obtaining directions, be sure to check up on road constructions and detours that may be occurring during the time of your trip. Being prepared will help you save time, gas, and best of all, money.

Research Weather

Are you driving through a Chicago winter down to a warmer climate such as Florida or Virginia? If that's the case, then your car should be prepared for a variety of possible weather conditions. Not only should you prepare your car with winter driving tools such as an ice scraper or de-icer, but you should also be ready to adjust your vehicle once you reach your sunny destination. Some checkups you might want to perform is tire pressure and an oil change - especially if your route is a long one.

Adjust to Road Conditions

Driving on icy roads in the winter calls for a different driving technique than summer driving on dry roads. As conditions change, so should your driving. Be sure to slow down during wet or icy weather in order to keep your road trip a happy one, free of fender benders or worse yet, serious accidents.

Be Prepared

During a winter road trip, you can never be too careful. Be sure that your car is stocked with all of the winter necessities, as well as an emergency kit. You should bring along extra clothes and blankets to keep you and your family safe in any situation. Of course, you should also check to see that you still have that spare tire with a jack and flares in case that winter road pot holes you fly over lead to a flat. By being prepared, you can face any winter road trip challenge you may come across.
