Pointers for Towing a Car or Boat
You may fix up antique cars, own dirt bikes, or own a boat; if you do, then it is very vital that towing is done the right way. Driving and towing something can be dangerous if certain safety tips aren't followed.
Here are the right ways you should tow:
- You should always use safety chains when you tow and read the manufacturer's recommendation on. Safety chains are mandatory and need to be crossed under the trailer's tongue so it won't drop on the road if for some reason it separated from the hitch. Don't attach chains to the bumper and leave slack for when the vehicle turns. Safety chains should not drag on the ground.
- Before you set out on the road, make sure the brake lights, taillights, and turn signals operate on the towed vehicle and work in conjunction with the vehicle that is being driven. There are light kits available for purchase which can magnetically connect or be strapped on to the towed trailer or vehicle.
- Know how much weight the vehicle you are driving can tow.
- Before driving on busy roads or highways, practice driving around your neighborhood. Practice backing; the trailer will go in a different direction then the car you are driving.
- Let there be a lot of distance between your vehicle and the car in front of you.
- Be ready to brake and begin braking early.
- The load you are towing should always be secure and not be able to shift or move around.
