Don't Buy a Car Until you have Checked Out These Safety Issues

Before you buy a car you should compare its safety ratings and features. Here are some safety checks that need to be taken into account before you sign any papers.

  • Take a look at the insurance-industry crash-test ratings. It is a closer representation of a real crash.
  • Look at government crash-test ratings. They research full frontal impact and side impact.
  • Check to see if the vehicle you are interested in has electronic stability control. It is recommended on vehicles, and especially SUVs. ESC helps to control a vehicle and keep it from sliding or going out of control, as well prevent it from rolling over.
  • The vehicle you choose should be less prone to a rollover. Cars that are higher off the ground usually have a greater chance of rolling.
  • Does the car have anti-lock brakes? An ABS is highly recommended in case there is a sudden stop because wheels won't lock up.
  • What kind of accident avoidance factor does it have? It is important to have good braking, handling, acceleration, visibility, and seat comfort.
  • Your car must have a great air bag system. Every car has front airbags, but it is important to know the type of system it has and if there are air bags on the side or in the rear.
  • Check out the safety belts; three point belts give the best protection.
  • A safe vehicle should have proper head restraints that help protect against whiplash and other neck injuries.
  • See if the car you are interested in has the LATCH system to protect children in car seats. LATCH systems do work better in certain vehicles. Child safety locks and power window switches are also important.
