Saving Money on Gas for Summer Road Trips
This summer many families and friends will be hitting the roads for weekend trips, weeklong vacations, and other long drives. With gas prices elevating more and more, it is important we save as much as we can on gas money so we can save it or spend it on things more worthwhile.
Here are some things you can do to save money on gas as you travel this summer:
Before you leave...
- Check tires and make sure they are properly inflated and aligned so the engine doesn't work harder and uses up more gasoline.
- Get your car serviced and top of any fluids and change your air filter.
While driving...
- Keep to the speed limit; if you speed the amount of miles per gallon you get will reduce by at least 15%.
- Do not accelerate like a NASCAR driver; sudden accelerations will take more gas away. Pay attention to the traffic ahead and gradually accelerate or slow down.
- Keep windows closed at highway speeds and mileage will improve because air drag is lessened. Try not to use air conditioning in heavy traffic.
When you get home...
- Take out all your items from your trip as soon as you get home to keep your vehicle's weight down.
- If you had a rooftop carrier on your vehicle, take it off. The drag it creates reduces mileage.
