Sharing the Road with Bicyclists and Motorcyclists

When the weather is warm, but not extremely hot as it is in the high summer months, bike riders and motorcycle riders come out in large numbers. Most of these accidents are avoidable; drivers are either distracted or can't see there is a biker. Here are some pointers how you can drive biker friendly.

  • When you stop at an intersection, check all directions for bikes and not just cars.
  • Look for anything unusual when you are driving. What is on or near the road, besides other vehicles?
  • If you can, drive with some space in the adjacent lane instead of right next to another car. If something happens, you can move over safely.
  • Always look far down the road to see what lies ahead.
  • Train your eyes to scan over different areas. Keep them moving to cover the whole roadway, as well as behind you.
  • Don't tailgate anyone riding on a bike or motorcycle.
  • Don't cut off anyone riding on a bike or motorcycle.
  • Give riders the right of way.
